I was born in Norfolk VA, grew up in the Saratoga Springs, NY area, went to college at Smith (https://smith.edu), grad school at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (https://rpi.edu), and had a 20+-year career as a technical documentation person. Then the bug bit and I went to law school; I started very part-time in the fall of 1999 at New England School of Law (https://nesl.edu) because of their Special Part-Time Program (which is really quite wonderful). When my tech-documentation job disappeared in a puff of recession logic and I could no longer afford to live in the Boston area, I transferred to what was then Franklin Pierce Law Center (now UNH School of Law; https://law.unh.edu). Since graduating in the top 20% of my law-school class in 2003, I've spent over 20 years concentrating in intellectual property and business law (yes, I have the patent prosecution ticket in my pocket). I've always had a finger in the personal bankruptcy space, though, due to my own sordid past in that realm; there's just something really satisfying about helping a client struggling with debt, even more so than helping a client get that patent or trademark through the rigorous examination rendered to such things at the US Patent & Trademark Office.

I've always been a solo practitioner; I was never part of a larger law firm. So how did I ever learn to practice law (they don't teach us that in law school)? Easy. The New York State Bar Association had a listserv in their General Practice section, filled with experienced lawyers who shared ideas and information. I joined that listserv and used it as my senior partner. I asked a LOT of dumb questions that kept me out of a LOT of trouble early on. Only one lawyer got pissy about it and that lawyer got roundly trounced by her colleagues. I owe those lawyers a lot, and I repay my debt by helping them out by actually understanding and sharing that understanding of the voodoo of intellectual property law.

For non-lawyer fun, I love playing and working with our Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever (named Einstein because he is very, very smart ... too smart for his fur), our two elderly kitties (Gus and Lucy) whom I've had since they were eight-week-old kittens, and planning the new addition on our house (it will be lovely ...).

And, back to the practice of law, I'm the person for other bankruptcy lawyers (and family lawyers ... and wills/estates lawyers ... and business lawyer ... and other lawyers) to contact in the event that your client has, or even thinks they have, a piece of intellectual property that is impacted by what your client is trying to do with you. You can inadvertently lose a LOT of value in your clients' IP if you don't handle it right. It's way cheaper and will have way less impact on your E&O insurance if you take a moment to talk to someone who speaks IP fluently ... and after 20+ years of IP practice, yes, I speak it fluently. I'm happy to help anyone who needs it.
